    Basic Tree Maintenance Tips

Trees can often be taken for given but intense weather can take its toll. It’s important to keep trees healthy and try to prevent illness or weather damage.

One of the very first things you can do is learn about the trees you want to look after and their specific needs. If you’re uncertain about the kind of tree you have, there are lots of resources online to help you, such as the Forestry Commission Tree Name Trail. When looking into trees, the main points to keep an eye out for are:

    • Type of soil needed
    • Quantity of water needed
    • Particular sensitivities (drought, water, wind, etc).

Once you know more about your trees, follow these 5 ideas to keep your trees durable and healthy.

    Protect the roots.

Focus on the zone around a tree up to where the branches extend. Roots can extend beyond this zone but this is the location where roots are more delicate. The key is to make sure that the soil is not too compact so that roots can keep absorbing water and oxygen.

    Protect the bark.

Consider the bark as an armour that secures the tree. Protecting the tree bark will avoid infections, diseases or insect activity. Look out for possible risks that might damage tree bark, including:.

    • Vehicles: trees near roads or driveways can suffer hits from high vehicles. Eliminate lower branches to avoid breakage and make sure trees are visible at night.
    • Lawn sprinklers: a spray of water that repetitively strikes bark at the same location can cause damage. If you use sprinklers to water your yard, make certain these don’t straight hit trees.
    • Branches: branches rubbing against each other can trigger damage to the bark. Prune branches properly so branches do not get laced.
    • Lawn devices: put on; t get yard equipment close to the tree trunks as this can cause major damage to the bark.

    Water effectively.

Trees typically flourish well in existing moisture conditions and don’t require any additional watering. Nevertheless, depending on your regional environment, you may need to water your trees throughout extended durations of dry spell. If you do need to water trees in the summertime, a periodic deep watering is chosen to a frequent misting. In winter season trees shouldn’t require any watering.

    Prune correctly.

We’ve formerly written about pruning trees as it’s a crucial part of tree maintenance. It’s something you can do yourself if you know what you are doing, otherwise you can always work with a professional. The main things to look out for are:.

    • Crossing branches: remove the smaller branch so the more powerful one can grow without being harmed.
    • Broken and dead branches: a clean cut will help the tree recover.

Low branches: remove branches that are low and are prone to damage (i.e. by an impact). You can also get rid of low branches for visual functions.

    Keep soil healthy.

There are 2 methods you can ensure that the soil around your tree is abundant in nutrients.

    • Use mulch. Spread a layer of mulch around your tree, about 2 to 4 inches thick. The mulch does not have to touch the trunk.
    • Plant yard or some kind of ground cover. Dead plant material will decay in the ground and enrich the soil. Make sure your plants can thrive in the shade and that their roots do not compete with the tree.
