    Basic Tree Maintenance Tips

Trees can typically be taken for granted but intense weather can take its toll. It’s important to keep trees healthy and attempt to avoid diseases or weather condition damage.

One of the first things you can do is learn about the trees you wish to take care of and their particular needs. If you’re not sure about the type of tree you have, there are numerous resources online to assist you, such as the Forestry Commission Tree Name Trail. When investigating trees, the main things to keep an eye out for are:

    • Type of soil required
    • Amount of water needed
    • Specific level of sensitivities (dry spell, water, wind, etc).

When you know more about your trees, follow these 5 ideas to keep your trees resistant and healthy.

    Secure the roots.

Focus on the zone around a tree as much as where the branches extend. Roots can extend beyond this zone however this is the area where roots are more delicate. The key is to make sure that the soil is not too compact so that roots can keep absorbing water and oxygen.

    Secure the bark.

Consider the bark as an armour that protects the tree. Protecting the tree bark will avoid infections, illness or insect activity. Look out for prospective risks that might damage tree bark, including:.

    • Vehicles: trees near roadways or driveways can suffer hits from tall vehicles. Get rid of lower branches to prevent damage and make sure trees show up in the evening.
    • Lawn sprinklers: a spray of water that over and over again strikes bark at the same location can cause damage. If you use sprinklers to water your lawn, make sure these do not directly hit trees.
    • Branches: branches rubbing versus each other can cause damage to the bark. Prune branches properly so branches do not get laced.
    • Lawn devices: wear; t get yard devices near the tree trunks as this can cause serious damage to the bark.

    Water efficiently.

Trees usually thrive well in existing moisture conditions and don’t require any additional watering. However, depending upon your regional climate, you may have to water your trees during extended periods of drought. If you do need to water trees in the summer, an occasional deep watering is chosen to a frequent misting. In winter season trees should not need any watering.

    Prune correctly.

We’ve previously discussed pruning trees as it’s an important part of tree maintenance. It’s something you can do yourself if you understand what you are doing, otherwise you can always employ a professional. The main things to keep an eye out for are:.

    • Crossing branches: get rid of the smaller branch so the stronger one can grow without being harmed.
    • Broken and dead branches: a clean cut will help the tree heal.

Low branches: get rid of branches that are low and are susceptible to damage (i.e. by an impact). You can also eliminate low branches for visual purposes.

    Keep soil healthy.

There are 2 methods you can ensure that the soil around your tree is abundant in nutrients.

    • Use mulch. Spread a layer of mulch around your tree, about 2 to 4 inches thick. The mulch does not need to touch the trunk.
    • Plant yard or some kind of ground cover. Dead plant material will decay in the ground and enrich the soil. Make certain your plants can prosper in the shade and that their roots do not compete with the tree.
