    Basic Tree Maintenance Tips

Trees can often be taken for granted but intense weather condition can take its toll. It is necessary to keep trees healthy and aim to avoid illness or weather damage.

One of the first things you can do is discover the trees you want to look after and their specific requirements. If you’re not exactly sure about the type of tree you have, there are numerous resources online to help you, such as the Forestry Commission Tree Name Trail. When researching trees, the main things to look out for are:

    • Type of soil required
    • Quantity of water needed
    • Specific level of sensitivities (dry spell, water, wind, etc).

Once you understand more about your trees, follow these 5 ideas to keep your trees durable and healthy.

    Secure the roots.

Focus on the zone around a tree as much as where the branches extend. Roots can extend beyond this zone however this is the location where roots are more sensitive. The secret is to make sure that the soil is not too compact so that roots can keep absorbing water and oxygen.

    Secure the bark.

Consider the bark as an armour that secures the tree. Securing the tree bark will avoid infections, diseases or insect activity. Watch out for potential dangers that might damage tree bark, including:.

    • Vehicles: trees near roads or driveways can suffer hits from tall vehicles. Get rid of lower branches to avoid damage and ensure trees show up at night.
    • Lawn sprinklers: a spray of water that repetitively strikes bark at the same place can trigger damage. If you use sprinklers to water your yard, make sure these do not straight strike trees.
    • Branches: branches rubbing against each other can trigger damage to the bark. Prune branches properly so branches do not get laced.
    • Yard equipment: put on; t get yard equipment near to the tree trunks as this can trigger severe damage to the bark.

    Water successfully.

Trees usually flourish well in existing wetness conditions and don’t require any additional watering. However, depending upon your local climate, you may need to water your trees throughout extended durations of drought. If you do need to water trees in the summer season, a periodic deep watering is preferred to a regular misting. In winter season trees shouldn’t need any watering.

    Prune correctly.

We’ve previously written about pruning trees as it’s an essential part of tree upkeep. It’s something you can do yourself if you understand exactly what you are doing, otherwise you can constantly hire a professional. The main points to watch out for are:.

    • Crossing branches: remove the smaller branch so the stronger one can grow without being harmed.
    • Broken and dead branches: a clean cut will help the tree heal.

Low branches: remove branches that are low and are prone to damage (i.e. by an impact). You can also eliminate low branches for aesthetic functions.

    Keep soil healthy.

There are two ways you can make sure that the soil around your tree is rich in nutrients.

    • Use mulch. Spread a layer of mulch around your tree, about 2 to 4 inches thick. The mulch does not have to touch the trunk.
    • Plant grass or some type of ground cover. Dead plant material will decay in the ground and improve the soil. Ensure your plants can flourish in the shade and that their roots do not take on the tree.
