    Basic Tree Maintenance Tips

Trees can often be considered approved but extreme weather can take its toll. It is essential to keep trees healthy and try to avoid illness or weather condition damage.

One of the very first things you can do is learn about the trees you want to look after and their particular requirements. If you’re not sure about the type of tree you have, there are numerous resources online to assist you, such as the Forestry Commission Tree Name Trail. When looking into trees, the main things to keep an eye out for are:

    • Type of soil needed
    • Quantity of water required
    • Specific sensitivities (drought, water, wind, etc).

Once you know more about your trees, follow these 5 ideas to keep your trees durable and healthy.

    Secure the roots.

Concentrate on the zone around a tree as much as where the branches extend. Roots can extend beyond this zone however this is the area where roots are more sensitive. The secret is to make sure that the soil is not too compact so that roots can keep soaking up water and oxygen.

    Secure the bark.

Think about the bark as an armour that secures the tree. Protecting the tree bark will prevent infections, illness or insect activity. Keep an eye out for possible threats that might damage tree bark, including:.

    • Vehicles: trees near roadways or driveways can suffer hits from high vehicles. Remove lower branches to avoid damage and make sure trees show up in the evening.
    • Sprinkler system: a spray of water that repetitively strikes bark at the same location can cause damage. If you use sprinklers to water your yard, make sure these do not directly hit trees.
    • Branches: branches rubbing versus each other can trigger damage to the bark. Prune branches correctly so branches do not get braided.
    • Yard equipment: wear; t get yard devices close to the tree trunks as this can cause serious damage to the bark.

    Water effectively.

Trees typically grow well in existing moisture conditions and do not require any additional watering. However, depending upon your local environment, you might have to water your trees during extended periods of drought. If you do need to water trees in the summer, an occasional deep watering is preferred to a frequent misting. In winter season trees should not need any watering.

    Prune properly.

We’ve previously discussed pruning trees as it’s an essential part of tree upkeep. It’s something you can do yourself if you know what you are doing, otherwise you can always work with an expert. The main things to look out for are:.

    • Crossing branches: remove the smaller sized branch so the stronger one can grow without being harmed.
    • Broken and dead branches: a tidy cut will help the tree heal.

Low branches: remove branches that are low and are vulnerable to damage (i.e. by an impact). You can also eliminate low branches for aesthetic functions.

    Keep soil healthy.

There are two ways you can ensure that the soil around your tree is abundant in nutrients.

    • Use mulch. Spread out a layer of mulch around your tree, about 2 to 4 inches thick. The mulch does not need to touch the trunk.
    • Plant grass or some type of ground cover. Dead plant material will decay in the ground and improve the soil. Make sure your plants can grow in the shade and that their roots don’t compete with the tree.
