Basic Tree Maintenance Tips

Trees can often be taken for granted but intense weather condition can take its toll. It is very important to keep trees healthy and attempt to prevent diseases or weather condition damage.

Among the very first things you can do is learn about the trees you wish to take care of and their specific needs. If you’re not exactly sure about the type of tree you have, there are lots of resources online to help you, such as the Forestry Commission Tree Name Trail. When researching trees, the main things to watch out for are:

  • Kind of soil needed
  • Quantity of water needed
  • Particular sensitivities (drought, water, wind, etc).

Once you know more about your trees, follow these 5 tips to keep your trees resilient and healthy.

Secure the roots.

Focus on the zone around a tree as much as where the branches extend. Roots can extend beyond this zone however this is the area where roots are more sensitive. The key is to make sure that the soil is not too compact so that roots can keep absorbing water and oxygen.

Protect the bark.

Consider the bark as an armour that safeguards the tree. Safeguarding the tree bark will avoid infections, illness or insect activity. Watch out for possible threats that might damage tree bark, including:.

  • Vehicles: trees near roads or driveways can suffer hits from high vehicles. Remove lower branches to prevent damage and make certain trees are visible in the evening.
  • Sprinkler system: a spray of water that repetitively hits bark at the same place can cause damage. If you use sprinklers to water your yard, ensure these don’t straight hit trees.
  • Branches: branches rubbing against each other can trigger damage to the bark. Prune branches properly so branches don’t get entwined.
  • Lawn equipment: put on; t get yard equipment near to the tree trunks as this can trigger serious damage to the bark.

Water effectively.

Trees generally flourish well in existing moisture conditions and don’t require any additional watering. However, depending on your regional environment, you might need to water your trees throughout extended durations of drought. If you do need to water trees in the summer season, an occasional deep watering is preferred to a regular misting. In winter season trees should not require any watering.

Prune appropriately.

We’ve previously written about pruning trees as it’s a crucial part of tree upkeep. It’s something you can do yourself if you know exactly what you are doing, otherwise you can always hire a professional. The main points to keep an eye out for are:.

  • Crossing branches: remove the smaller sized branch so the stronger one can grow without being harmed.
  • Broken and dead branches: a clean cut will assist the tree heal.

Low branches: remove branches that are low and are vulnerable to damage (i.e. by an impact). You can also get rid of low branches for visual purposes.

Keep soil healthy.

There are 2 methods you can ensure that the soil around your tree is rich in nutrients.

  • Use mulch. Spread out a layer of mulch around your tree, about 2 to 4 inches thick. The mulch does not need to touch the trunk.
  • Plant turf or some type of ground cover. Dead plant product will decay in the ground and enhance the soil. Make sure your plants can grow in the shade and that their roots do not take on the tree.
