Basic Tree Maintenance Tips

Trees can often be taken for given but intense weather can take its toll. It’s important to keep trees healthy and aim to avoid illness or weather condition damage.

One of the very first things you can do is find out about the trees you wish to take care of and their particular needs. If you’re not sure about the type of tree you have, there are lots of resources online to assist you, such as the Forestry Commission Tree Name Trail. When researching trees, the main points to watch out for are:

  • Kind of soil needed
  • Quantity of water needed
  • Specific sensitivities (drought, water, wind, etc).

Once you know more about your trees, follow these 5 ideas to keep your trees resilient and healthy.

Secure the roots.

Focus on the zone around a tree approximately where the branches extend. Roots can extend beyond this zone but this is the area where roots are more sensitive. The secret is to make sure that the soil is not too compact so that roots can keep soaking up water and oxygen.

Protect the bark.

Consider the bark as an armour that safeguards the tree. Safeguarding the tree bark will avoid infections, illness or insect activity. Watch out for potential dangers that could harm tree bark, including:.

  • Vehicles: trees near roadways or driveways can suffer hits from tall vehicles. Remove lower branches to avoid breakage and ensure trees show up during the night.
  • Sprinkler system: a spray of water that repetitively hits bark at the same location can trigger damage. If you use sprinklers to water your yard, make sure these do not directly hit trees.
  • Branches: branches rubbing versus each other can cause damage to the bark. Prune branches correctly so branches don’t get braided.
  • Yard equipment: put on; t get yard devices near to the tree trunks as this can trigger serious damage to the bark.

Water effectively.

Trees usually thrive well in existing wetness conditions and don’t need any extra watering. However, depending on your local environment, you may have to water your trees during extended durations of drought. If you do have to water trees in the summer season, an occasional deep watering is chosen to a regular misting. In winter season trees should not need any watering.

Prune properly.

We’ve formerly discussed pruning trees as it’s a vital part of tree upkeep. It’s something you can do yourself if you know exactly what you are doing, otherwise you can always hire an expert. The main points to watch out for are:.

  • Crossing branches: remove the smaller branch so the stronger one can grow without being damaged.
  • Broken and dead branches: a clean cut will help the tree heal.

Low branches: remove branches that are low and are prone to damage (i.e. by an impact). You can also remove low branches for visual functions.

Keep soil healthy.

There are two methods you can make certain that the soil around your tree is rich in nutrients.

  • Usage mulch. Spread a layer of mulch around your tree, about 2 to 4 inches thick. The mulch does not need to touch the trunk.
  • Plant lawn or some type of ground cover. Dead plant product will decay in the ground and improve the soil. Make certain your plants can thrive in the shade and that their roots don’t compete with the tree.
